Our take

Island Dreams by Khadlaj Perfumes opens with a bright pop of ginger and bergamot, the ginger bringing a spark of warmth that cuts through the citrus like sunlight through a spray of sea foam. The heart is almost entirely grapefruit, tart and zesty, but it stays lean, never sweet or syrupy. That grapefruit hovers for an hour before receding into a clean base of musk and ambroxan, the latter giving a faintly salty, mineral undertone. The whole composition feels like the last five minutes of golden hour on a quiet beach, where the heat of the day lingers but the breeze has already turned cooler.

This is a synthetic fragrance, unapologetically so, but it is well blended and avoids the screech of cheaper ambroxan bombs. The problem is its shyness. With a sillage rating barely above 2.8, you have to press your wrist to someone’s nose for them to notice, and longevity taps out around three or four hours before becoming a skin scent. It is a whisper, not a statement.

Island Dreams suits someone who wants a fresh, airy companion for hot summer afternoons or lazy spring mornings, someone who values clean proximity over projection. Skip it if you need your fragrance to announce your arrival or if you prefer deep, resinous orientals despite its Oriental classification. Wear it to a brunch on a patio or a solo walk along the shore. It is a polite daydream, not a destination.
