Our take

Sun opens with citrus and orange flower, Amalfi lemon and bergamot brightened by cassis and other fruity notes, though the name undersells what happens next. Pierre Bourdon composed it for Jil Sander in 1989, and by the time ylang-ylang, heliotrope, carnation, orris root and rose settle in, the fragrance has already turned warmer and denser than the opening suggests. Vanille, benzoin, amber, tonka bean and styrax build a thick, sweet base underneath, with sandalwood, patchouli and a trace of tobacco leaf giving the sweetness some grip and texture instead of letting it sit flat.

It favors summer heavily, with the fruity, floral top best suited to warm air even though the dense amber base underneath feels almost wintery by contrast, a strange pairing that somehow works. Staying power is moderate, holding for a good while before the amber and vanilla take over completely, and the sillage stays fairly close, drifting only as far as the person sitting beside you. There is, underneath it all, a heavy velvet curtain that somehow smells of vanilla and citrus at once, warm cloth holding in a bright, sweet weight.
