Rose is the most misunderstood note in perfumery. Say the word and people picture their grandmother's soap, but a modern rose can be dark, spicy, jammy or almost metallic. It's also one of the few notes that works beautifully in fragrances for men, which is why you'll see plenty of those below.

This list is ranked from real community ratings rather than our own taste. We kept only fragrances with enough votes to trust the score, then ordered by rating. Some are soft and powdery; others pair rose with oud, spice or leather for something far bolder.

Are rose perfumes only for women?

Not at all. Rose has a long history in men's fragrance, especially blended with oud or spice. Several of the top-rated picks here are masculine or unisex.

Why do some rose perfumes smell nothing like a rose?

Perfumers use rose as a building block, not a literal copy of the flower. Paired with oud or leather it reads dark and smoky; with fruit it turns jammy; with musk, clean and powdery.
