Our take

Bergamot and grapefruit open Ambre Nuit briefly and a little bitterly before damask rose takes over almost immediately, backed by pink pepper for a warm, faintly spicy edge. It's a rose built for cold weather, dense and a touch resinous rather than fresh or dewy.

Ambergris, guaiac wood, cedar and patchouli form the base, woody and musky, giving the rose a dry, amber-tinted foundation with real depth. Launched in 2009, it leans firmly toward night wear and colder months, strongest through fall and winter, with spring the only other season it holds up in. The rose never turns soft or powdery here, staying dry and slightly bitter against all that wood and amber.

How long it lasts stays average, nothing more, and the trail is a modest bubble, warm and rosy, picked up by anyone standing close enough to notice. The pink pepper never fully disappears either, resurfacing every so often as a faint tingle against all that warm amber and wood. Ambre Nuit suits evening wear in cold weather best, a dense, amber rose with real weight behind it, built to stand up to a heavy coat and a cold walk outside.
