About the house

René Lalique (1860-1945) trained as a goldsmith and designed jewelry for houses such as Cartier and Boucheron before he moved to glass. The company dates to 1888 in Paris, when he registered his RL mark. His early jewellery drew on dragonflies, orchids and peacocks, and from 1895 he made pieces for Samuel Bing's Maison de l'Art Nouveau.

In 1907 he began designing luxury perfume bottles for François Coty. Other houses followed, among them d'Orsay, Roger & Gallet, Houbigant, Molinard, Worth and Caron, for which he made the Narcisse Noir flacon in 1911. A 2021 Porsche magazine profile says he industrialized the perfume bottle. The Wingen-sur-Moder glassworks opened in 1921 as the Verrerie d'Alsace and is today the company's only production site.

After René died, his son Marc took over, the firm shifted toward lead crystal, and it was renamed Cristallerie Lalique in 1962. His granddaughter Marie-Claude led the company from 1977, after Marc's death, and it was sold to the Pochet group in 1994. Sources differ on when Lalique fragrances began, with one reporting Lalique de Lalique as the first of the perfume line and another crediting Marie-Claude with launching them.

More recently the company has been tied to Silvio Denz, a Swiss businessman who ran the family perfumery chain Alrodo from 1980. He founded Art & Fragrance, which held licences such as Alain Delon, Parfums Grès, Jaguar and Bentley and was renamed Lalique Group in 2016. Accounts of when Lalique changed hands vary, and one bottle-collector source gives a price of 44 million euros. Denz has said he never planned to take over a crystal works; his interest grew out of collecting Lalique perfume bottles. He reported investing over 25 million euros in the Wingen site. The group's shares were delisted from the SIX Swiss Exchange in September 2024 after his tender offer.

Encre Noire, a men's fragrance composed by Nathalie Lorson, launched in 2006. One retailer describes its name as directly inspired by the Biche inkwell René Lalique made in 1913. An EDP version, Encre Noire A L'Extreme, followed in 2015.
