Ombre Noire opens with a crisp, almost peppery fig leaf and a cooling spear of mint, a green freshness that tricks you into thinking this is a light spring scent. But that Bergamot fades fast, and within minutes the tobacco leaf unfurls, dry and slightly sweet, dusted with cinnamon and a scratch of papyrus. Then the base pulls you into its real territory: a boozy, resinous Cognac softened by myrrh and olibanum, with cedar and tonka providing a warm, vanillic anchor. The overall character is that of an old leather armchair in a paneled library, the cushions holding the ghost of a cigar and a forgotten snifter of brandy. It feels natural in its composition, but the presentation is decidedly mainstream-leaning, like a niche idea filtered through a designer lens. And here’s the weakness: the sillage and longevity are criminally low for a scent this rich. 2.76 and 3.16 out of 5 are not just numbers, they’re a warning. You get maybe two hours of intimate presence before it becomes a skin scent. Who should wear it?
