Our take

This is not a fragrance that shouts. It arrives with a polite dusting of nutmeg and lemon, the citrus sharp and cold, the spice dry and almost chalky. Then a proper lavender note steps in, and you understand immediately why this is called Edition. It smells like a well-ironed cotton shirt that has been aired out on a line in a lavender field. The heart is where the carnation comes through, a powdery, peppery bloom that sits beside clary sage and a whisper of jasmine, never sweet, always composed. As it dries, the oak moss and vetiver take over, earthy and slightly bitter, with Virginia cedar adding a clean structural support. This is a natural smelling, thoroughly mainstream aromatic fougere from 1984, and it feels like something your grandfather would have worn to a Sunday lunch. The sillage is a modest 2.71 and longevity clocks in just above three hours, so you have to press your wrist to your nose to really enjoy it after the first hour. That is the honest weakness. But for those who want a scent that stays close, that doesn’t announce itself before you walk in, this is a pleasure. It suits men who prefer understatement over performance. Skip it if you want a beast that projects. Wear it on a spring afternoon, a summer evening before the heat breaks, or a crisp fall morning. It is a day fragrance through and through, and it knows exactly where it belongs.
