Burberry Hero Parfum opens with a clean, almost waxy pop of amyris, that curious note straddling sandalwood and citrus without committing to either. It quickly yields to cedarwood, but not the bristly, pencil-shavings kind. This cedar is polished, smoothed down, a plank of blonde wood that has been sanded, oiled, and left to rest in a shadowy workshop. The drydown introduces cypriol, or nagarmotha, which brings a smoky, leathery earthiness that feels like the underside of a damp log in a forest after rain. The overall character is that of a well-worn leather armchair sitting alone in a library with the fire gone out. It is refined, balsamic, and lightly powdery, leaning more toward an aromatic incense than a full-on gourmand. The composition feels natural enough to pass for niche but carries a mainstream clarity that makes it immediately likable.
And yet, for all its composed elegance, Hero Parfum suffers from a shrinking violet complex. The sillage is barely a whisper, hovering around 2.85 on the scale, and longevity clocks in at a middling 3.51, which means you will be reapplying if you hope to smell it past lunch. This is a fragrance that sits close to the skin, a personal indulgence rather than a declaration. It suits the man who wants to smell good for himself, not for the crowded subway car. Skip it if you need projection or a beast-mode performer. Wear it on a crisp winter evening or a cool fall night, ideally layered under a wool coat where it can bloom in the warmth.
