Does a perfume need to make sense to smell good? This one answers with a loud yes. Lily Lambert built Spectrum E around opium, musk and cacao, then let the rest of the accords run wild. The result is a musky, floral, sweet mix that also calls itself aquatic, balsamic, warm spicy and fresh. It is a crowded room where cacao brings a soft chocolate warmth and musk wraps everything in a powdery haze. The opium note adds a deep, resinous weight that keeps the sweetness from floating away. You get the feeling that the formula was composed by throwing open a full cabinet and seeing what would stick.
The image that fits is a velvet curtain in a humid greenhouse. The fabric is heavy and dark, but the air around it is damp and bright. That clash is exactly what makes the fragrance interesting.
