Twilight Shimmer opens with a sticky, jammy burst of plum and red fruits, the kind of sweet that feels like a spoonful of preserves left out overnight. Then the Laotian oud creeps in, but it’s not the smoky, barnyard kind you’d find in a niche masterpiece. It’s a polite, sanitized oud, smoothed over by a lactonic praline and soft woods in the base, making the whole thing feel like a cashmere throw that’s been sprayed with a vanilla candle. The overall image is a dimly lit hotel bar at 11 p.m., where a woman in a sequined top sips a syrupy cocktail and the gloss on her lipstick catches the light just so. It’s sweet, dense, and decidedly synthetic, mainstream through and through, leaning heavy rather than fresh. The sillage is a whisper, barely reaching three feet, and longevity fades after three or four hours, which the numbers back up with a 3.40 and 3.61 respectively. This is for someone who wants a cozy, dessert-like scent for cold weather date nights, but anyone expecting true oud or animalic bite will be disappointed. Best worn in fall or winter, after dusk, when you want to feel like you’re wrapped in a sugared haze but don’t mind reapplying before the last call.
