K by Dolce & Gabbana opens with an unusually wide citrus spread: juniper berries alongside blood orange, Sicilian lemon and a general citrus accord, sharp, bittersweet and a little resinous from the juniper rather than purely sweet. It smells more like gin than cologne for the first few minutes, an unusual choice for a mainstream men's release. Longevity sits at an easygoing moderate level, there for a while without dominating.
Pimento gives the heart a peppery kick, and lavender, clary sage and geranium bring in an herbal, slightly green quality that runs straight through to the base. Clary sage in particular gives the middle a faintly tea-like dryness, adding texture beneath the brighter citrus and pepper.
Vetiver, cedar and patchouli close it out, dry and earthy, grounding all that citrus and pepper in something more serious by the finish. The overall shape moves from bright and sharp to dry and grounded without much of a sweet stretch in between, which keeps it feeling more masculine-classic than modern-gourmand.
It suits spring and summer best, most alive in bright daylight when the citrus opening has room to shine. Sillage stays modest, a close, citrus-forward cloud that stays near the collar.
