Our take

Acqua di Giò Absolu keeps the salt-and-citrus backbone of the original but pushes it toward something heavier and drier underneath. Alberto Morillas built it for Armani in 2018, opening on sea notes, bergamot, pear, apple, grapefruit and lemon before lavender, rosemary and geranium settle the middle, aromatic and green rather than purely marine.

Woody notes, tonka bean, amberwood, patchouli and labdanum build a warm, dry base underneath the marine opening, giving the whole thing real weight by the finish. The transition from bright citrus to warm wood happens gradually, so the fragrance never feels like two separate ideas stitched together.

It suits nearly any season from spring through fall, comfortable for daytime errands and just as much at home dressed up for an evening out. Staying power is long, the citrus opening giving way slowly to a dry woody base that holds its ground, and the trail is modest, picked up mainly by whoever stands nearby.

It suits anyone who wants a fresh opening with real substance underneath, not just a splash of citrus that fades to nothing, the same way a wet rock at the tideline warms under the sun until the salt smell turns dry and a little sweet.
