Our take

Armani Code Ultimate opens with a sharp, almost medicinal punch of star anise that feels more licorice than spice, cut by a brief flash of tart grapefruit and soft mandarin. That citrus dissolves quickly, leaving the anise to tangle with heliotrope’s chalky almond sweetness and a green, dusty olive blossom note. The heart is a powdery cedar and cypress blend that never quite commits to being woody or floral it hovers somewhere in between, airy and a bit synthetic in the way many designer orientals are. Once the vanilla and tonka roll in, the whole thing settles into a sweet, creamy base with guaiac wood adding a faint smoky backbone, but it remains largely a cloud of vanilla powder and anise-spiced amber.

This is a fragrance that feels like a velvet rope in a dimly lit lounge: smooth, polished, and just a little too aware of its own choreography. It wears close to the skin after the first hour sillage hovers around a three, and longevity barely pushes past four or five hours before it fades to a faint sweetness. For evening wear in autumn or winter, it works well as a date night scent that doesn’t shout but does want to be noticed up close. The powdery florals and licorice edge give it a distinct character, but if you dislike sweet, dusty fragrances or want something bold enough to fill a room, you will find it frustratingly soft and evasive. It is a perfectly competent mainstream release that feels designed for the man who wants to smell expensive without risking offense a safe, pleasant choice that never quite reaches for anything dangerous.
