Our take

Noir Kogane opens with a dense fist of tobacco and Haitian vetiver, earthy and slightly green, like crushed leaves after a storm. The vetiver grounds the tobacco’s sweet leafiness, keeping things dry and serious. Then elemi cracks through with a resinous, lemony pop, softened by saffron’s honeyed leather warmth. That saffron is the trick, it bridges the aromatic top into the base without letting things turn medicinal. On the drydown, leather takes over. This is not a bright, polished saddle. It is a dark, almost animalic leather, balsamic and smoky, with a faint sweetness that clings like old wax on wood.

The overall character is a leather armchair left in a forgotten study, the cushions still warm from a body that just stood up. It feels heavy and natural, closer to niche than mainstream, though the longevity is impressive at over four hours and the sillage stays moderate, hovering just above the skin. That is the weakness. For a fragrance this rich, I want it to project, but it chooses intimacy over broadcast.

Wear this on a frozen winter night, when the cold air needs a counterweight of warmth and shadow. It belongs to someone who likes their scents brooding, leathery, and unapologetically animalic. Skip it if you prefer fresh citrus or laundry musks. This is a coal bed, not a candle.
