Our take

Jacques Cavallier Belletrud knows his way around a powder puff. Fantasmagory opens with a brisk snap of anise and ginger, that licorice-like coolness cutting through a warm, nutty almond heart. The floral notes here are barely a whisper, a ghost of something white and soft, before the base settles into a creamy vanilla and a smooth, unsullied leather. This is not the cracked saddle of a cowboy; it is a buttery glove lined with sweet almond dust. The overall impression is of a velvet curtain that smells like a patisserie, heavy and plush but never cloying.

The longevity is impressive at 4.34, and the sillage is present enough at 3.83 to leave a gentle wake. Yet the 3.94 rating tells a story: this is a very good, very safe oriental vanilla, not a revelation. It feels polished to a gleam, a bit mainstream in its desire to please. The sweet, powdery, faintly fruited accord is undeniably pleasant, but it lacks the weird, phantom edge its name promises.

This is a cold weather comfort blanket, thriving in autumn and winter, and it works just as easily for a daytime stroll as a dinner date. Who should wear it? Anyone who wants a crowd-pleasing gourmand with a touch of grown-up leather. Who should skip it? Those hoping for a true ghost story, because this fantasmagory is more sweet dream than nightmare.
