Our take

Rhapsody by Louis Vuitton opens with a crisp, almost prickly greenness, a bitter mate leaf crushed against a damp wedge of oakmoss. A ghost of lily of the valley flits through before the jasmine and rose wade in, but these flowers aren’t sugared or dewy. They wear a woolly, earthy coat of patchouli and vetiver that keeps them tethered to the soil. Jacques Cavallier Belletrud has built a chypre that feels like a vintage brooch dug up from a garden, still speckled with dirt. The dry down settles into a woody, aromatic musk that hugs the skin rather than shouting.

At a longevity of nearly 4.5 and sillage around 4, this fragrance performs without bullying a room. It earns a modest 3.74 rating because while it’s masterfully blended, it never fully erupts into a memorable crescendo. The white floral heart, meant to sing, stays politely muffled behind that mossy veil. This is a spring and autumn staple, equally happy at a lunch meeting or a twilight walk. It suits someone who wants a thoughtful, natural-smelling floral that doesn’t scream for attention. Skip it if you crave sweetness or a tropical burst. Rhapsody is fine tailoring, not a fireworks display, and that is both its charm and its quiet limit.
