Our take

Coffee is the whole reason to pay attention to Ebony Wood. Pink pepper, grapefruit and cypress open bright and a little sharp, more citrus cologne than coffee shop at first, but the moment the coffee note arrives in the heart, the composition turns dark and bitter-sweet almost immediately, and the citrus fades into a supporting role. It is a genuinely unusual pairing, more roastery than fruit stand once the coffee takes hold.

Vetiver and patchouli anchor the base, earthy and dry, letting the coffee note sit on top of real wood instead of a syrupy accord that could have tipped it toward a dessert drink. There is a slightly bitter, grounded quality to the whole drydown, more coffee grounds than coffee dessert. Staying power is moderate, the coffee note easing back gradually over a comfortable stretch of wear, and the sillage stays modest, present enough for a colleague to notice over a shared coffee, appropriately enough. Fall and winter bring out the earthy, woody side best, when the coffee reads warmer against cold air. Anyone who likes coffee-forward scents but wants the wood to matter too should get along with this one just fine.
