Our take

Freakincense opens with a spritz of lime so tart it almost bites, but pink pepper softens the edge and violet adds a dusty, almost cosmetic powder that lingers just beneath the citrus. That’s the sleight of hand here: Luca Maffei lets the top notes feel bright and brisk, then swaps them for a smoky, resinous core where elemi’s lemony pitch meets incense that’s not churchy but more like the last curl of smoke from a campfire that burned hours ago. Cashmeran wraps it all in a fuzzy, synthetic warmth that keeps the woody base from turning too stern. Vetiver and patchouli give it dirt and root, while labdanum adds a sticky, ambered sweetness that clings close to the skin.

This is a fragrance that behaves like a whispered argument: present enough to intrigue, but never loud enough to win the room. Its sillage is modest, even shy, and longevity taps out after a few hours which feels frustrating when the drydown is so good. You’ll get the most out of it in fall or winter, especially if you’re layering it over a sweater or wearing it to a dinner where you want people to lean in, not recoil. It’s neither sugary nor fresh, but a smokey, peppery balsamic that feels more niche than mainstream, though the synthetic cashmeran keeps it from pretending to be all-natural.

Who should wear it? Someone who wants to smell like the morning after a bonfire, when the embers are still warm but the fire is out. Skip it if you crave projection or ten hours of sillage. This one blurs into your own skin, and that’s either its flaw or its charm. 🌲
