Our take

Ooh La Rouge opens with a candied fist: blood grapefruit turned jammy, praline so thick it clings to the teeth, and a saffron that reads more warm metal than spice. The initial blast is sweet, almost synthetic in its intensity, like a neon sign buzzing outside a dessert bar. Then the white florals roll in, a heavy trio of star jasmine, gardenia, and tuberose that steam under the sugar, turning the whole thing into a fruit punch left out in the afternoon sun, fermented and heady. On the dry down, amberwood and musk smooth the edges into a cozy, lactonic skin scent, but the metallic twang never fully fades, and that leather note is more a suggestion than a punch.

This is a mainstream oriental floral that wears like a sequined top, eye catching from a distance but not built for close inspection. The longevity clocks in at just over three hours, and the sillage is a whisper after the first hour, so you will need to reapply or accept its brief, bright bloom. It feels best in fall and winter, when the warmth can act as a counterpoint to cold air, and it works for daytime errands or a casual dinner, not a black tie affair. Who should reach for it? Someone who loves sweet, lactonic florals and doesn’t mind babysitting a fragrance. Who should skip? Anyone expecting a beast or a daring composition. After all, when a perfume evaporates faster than your lipstick, is it a spritz or a tease?
