Civet
Fragrance notes
Character
It opens with a citrusy shriek of bergamot and lemon, almost bracing, before the tarragon and black pepper settle in like a prelude to trouble. Then the animalics arrive, not as a filthy roar but as a warm, humid weight, civet cut with resins and labdanum, held aloft by tuberose and ylang-ylang that refuse to be demure. The coffee note flickers through like a bitter memory, and the incense and balsams push it all into a cozy, ambered dusk. What you get is a mood, not a story: a worn leather armchair in a shuttered room, the previous occupant still radiating heat and something faintly unwashed.
This is heavy, but not loud. The sillage, at 3.17, stays close to the skin, like a secret you are not sure you want known. Longevity is decent, around 3.85, enough to carry you through an evening. It feels niche in the best sense, unapologetically complex, with a powdery heliotrope and vanilla softening the edges so it never becomes a caricature of itself. Yet the breadth of notes sometimes blurs into a muddled, balsamic haze, and the opening citrus can feel jarring against the animalic core.
This suits someone who wants to smell like a vintage perfume counter that has been abandoned for decades, then reentered with a fresh pot of coffee. Skip it if you crave clean or shy scents, or if a hint of urinous warmth makes you recoil. Civet belongs to fall and winter evenings, best worn to a dimly lit bar or a late night walk where no one will get too close. Is there any better way to say *I am here, but do not touch*, while secretly hoping they will?
