Our take

Pardon opens on a strange pairing: dark chocolate and cinnamon pressed against agarwood, with a thin trace of magnolia and other unnamed flowers just visible above them. Alessandro Gualtieri built it for Nasomatto in 2011, and from the first minute it behaves less like a fragrance moving through stages and more like a single dense block of chocolate and wood.

Tonka bean rounds off the cinnamon's edge, and sandalwood runs underneath the whole composition, dry and a little dusty, giving the cacao something to lean against besides sugar. The floral top barely registers once the chocolate and wood take hold, more a memory of magnolia than an actual note you can pick out.

Wear time on skin runs long, holding its shape well after the opening settles, and the trail it leaves is measured, noticed by whoever stands nearby without needing an introduction. Cold, dark evenings suit it best, matching how strongly it leans toward winter and fall over the brighter months.

Anyone chasing an unusual, dense gourmand will find plenty to work through here, though the two florals in the top notes barely survive contact with the cinnamon and cacao. Leave a square of dark chocolate resting on a warm stone long enough and the two smells become one.
