Our take

There is a moment in the opening of A Kiss from a Rose when the green notes bite into black currant like a thumbnail splitting a berry, tart and sharp and entirely unapologetic. Alberto Morillas knows how to make a rose behave, and here he gives it a May rose that never once lounges in a velvet chair. It walks through wet grass with jasmine sambac clinging to its hem, and the whole affair feels like a greenhouse just after a storm, glass dripping, soil turned, petals bruised but holding.

The base is where the structure reveals itself. Cypriol oil brings a peppery, papery woodiness that keeps the florals from floating away into pink cloud territory, and white musk dusts the edges like fine chalk. But the sillage here is a whisper, barely a 2.58 out of five, and longevity hovers around three hours before the whole thing becomes a ghost on your skin. That might be a dealbreaker for anyone who wants their perfume to announce itself from across a dinner table.

This is a fragrance for the person who sprays on a cool spring morning and wants the scent to feel intimate, like a secret passed in a library aisle. It is not for the loud, the impatient, or anyone expecting a cloud of jammy roses. It is a green stem with a single bloom, a piece of earth tucked into a collar. Wear it to a late brunch, a museum afternoon, or any day you want to smell like you just walked through a garden gate and closed it behind you.
