Our take

Qaa’ed Al Shabaab opens with a surprising flash of osmanthus and ylang-ylang, their fruity, almost jammy sweetness cutting through the air before the shadows close in. That floral burst is a brief handshake. Within minutes, the leather and cedar seize control, dry and smoky, like running a hand over a well-worn saddle in a room full of sandalwood incense. The base settles into a dark, sticky oud softened by a whisper of light amber, not the screechy kind, but one that keeps the animalic edge from becoming a full-on zoo.

This is not a fragrance for the office or a spring stroll. It is a heavy, brooding Oriental that leans synthetic in the top notes, then smoothes out into a surprisingly wearable leather-oud blend. The longevity is excellent, over eight hours on skin, while sillage hovers at a respectful arm’s length, loud enough to announce your arrival but not to clear the room. The numbers back it up: it thrives in winter and fall, overwhelmingly at night.

The whole thing feels like a dimly lit lounge where the velvet curtains have absorbed decades of cigar smoke. It is simultaneously sweet from the osmanthus and animalic from the oud, a contradiction that works. Who should wear it? The person who wants to smell like they own a leather jacket that has seen things. Who should skip? Anyone looking for freshness or subtlety. This is a statement, but one worth making when the temperature drops and the lights go low.
