Our take

Deer by Wolf Brothers opens with a curious scuffle of mint and cumin, bright and herbal, then a fistful of crushed pistachio and coffee that lands like a picnic blanket dropped on damp earth. The tobacco and clary sage hover just behind, keeping things from tipping into gourmand territory. As it settles, hay and cedar take over, dry and slightly sweet, with patchouli adding a rooty shadow. The base of leather and musk is soft, almost shy, like the animal has already retreated into the underbrush.

This is a whisper of a fragrance, not a roar. The sillage is genuinely modest, and longevity hovers around moderate, so anyone expecting a scent that announces itself from across the room will be disappointed. That close-to-skin quality, however, suits its character: it smells like a leather jacket left overnight in a barn full of dried hay and wild mint, with coffee grounds in the pocket. The composition feels natural, even a little rustic, leaning niche in its refusal to be obviously pretty.

It works best in cooler weather, spring and fall especially, and feels equally right for a daytime walk in the woods or a quiet evening by a fire. Skip it if you want projection or sweetness that begs for attention. Wear it if you appreciate a fragrance that asks for a second sniff, not a first impression.
