Character
Djelem, Djelem opens with hyssop that carries a cool, slightly medicinal edge. The initial impression is green and brisk, moving quickly into a heart where artemisia and tobacco take hold. Celery adds a vegetal, saline snap that keeps the tobacco from settling into something heavy or dark. The blend feels dry and textured rather than sweet in these early stages, with the herbal notes leading the way.
The base expands into a dense mix of tolu balsam, peru balsam, and benzoin that finally brings the amber and balsamic accords forward. Tonka bean and patchouli deepen the sweetness, while leather, oakmoss, and cedar provide a firm, woody structure. Hyrax and white musk add a musky, animalic warmth that lingers beneath the powdery surface. Sage runs through the drydown to maintain the herbal character established at the start. The composition is complex and richly layered, but the celery note in the heart can feel sharply out of place against the smooth balsams and resins.
