Our take

There is a deliberate, almost scholarly beauty to Lattafa’s La Collection d’antiquités 1505, a fragrance that feels less like a perfume and more like a sealed letter from an apothecary’s library. It opens with a crushed black cherry, tart and jammy, threaded through with saffron’s metallic saffron sting. That fruit does not linger in a sugared haze; it is immediately pulled into a dark, resinous heart where frankincense smolders beside osmanthus’s leathery apricot fuzz and the clean creaminess of amyris. The dry down is a dense, balsamic tangle of guaiac wood, smoky styrax, and cypriol’s earthy, vetiver-like bite. The overall character is best imagined as an antique wooden cabinet, its drawers lined with dried herbs, cherry preserves, and a forgotten stick of incense left to char on a silver tray.

This is not a sweet fragrance, nor is it a fresh one. It is thick, warm, and quietly synthetic in the way that Lattafa’s best releases lean into a polished, slightly glossy amber backbone. The sillage sits close to the skin, hovering at a modest two-point-nine-five, and longevity is middling at three-point-five-six, which means you will need to reapply if you want the incense and cherry to last through an evening. That restraint, however, makes it a perfect companion for autumn evenings and deep winter afternoons, when the air is cold enough to sharpen its balsamic edges. It suits the person who enjoys brooding, unisex woody florals but cannot stomach the price of an Amouage attar. Skip it if you crave projection or a bright fruit bomb. Wear it to a dimly lit bookstore, a dinner where you want to stay close and quiet, or a night curled under a wool blanket. One rhetorical question lingers: why does the cherry always flee first, leaving only the ghost of incense and wood?
