Our take

Lattafa’s Niche Emarati Khalid opens with a slap of stingingly sharp leather, pinched by saffron’s metallic tang and the resinous, almost jammy weight of labdanum. That first blast is rough, even abrasive, the kind of raw hide that hasn’t been broken in yet. But give it ten minutes. The cade oil and birch arrive like a smoldering campfire, smudging the edges of that leather with bitter, smoky creosote, while patchouli dusts the whole affair in earthy cocoa-dryness. As it settles, the base reveals its real architecture: a chewy, medicinal oud wrapped in tolu balsam’s vanilla-tinged amber and benzoin’s powdery warmth. The overall character is best captured by the image of a worn, tar-stained saddle left overnight next to a dying fire in a cedar forest. It feels heavy, decidedly masculine in the old-school sense, and leans more synthetic than natural (that initial leather has a plastic underbelly), but the dry down gains a surprising balsamic smoothness. Longevity is impressive, clinging close to skin for a full workday, though sillage is moderate: it sits in a polite arm’s length rather than announcing itself from across the room. This is a fragrance for the man who appreciates the grit of a real leather interior and isn’t afraid of smoke settling into his coat. Skip it if you prefer your leather clean or your ouds custardy and sweet. Best worn on cold winter nights, buttoned up to the collar, when the air can take the edge off its bitterness and let the amber glow beneath.
