Our take

Chevalier Vert opens like a snapped rhubarb stalk dragged through wet tomato leaves, all sharp acidic green and bitter chlorophyll. The wormwood and violet leaf cut deeper, a medicinal coolness that never quite sweetens. Orris root dusts the edges with a faint powdery iris, but the Sichuan pepper keeps things restless, a prickle beneath the skin. This is not a gentle pastoral scent. It is a glass greenhouse after a hailstorm, shattered panes and crushed stems, the air thick with sap and ozone.

The dry down settles into woody notes and a ghost of peony, but the core remains stubbornly green and slightly aquatic, almost metallic. It feels natural in the way a freshly weeded garden feels natural, raw and unapologetic. This is niche through and through, an uncompromising composition from perfumer Ellen Covey that refuses to pander. The longevity is respectable for a green fragrance, around four to five hours, and the sillage sits close, a personal aura rather than a broadcast.

Who should wear it? Anyone who loves the bite of real greenery, the smell of crushed stems and damp earth. Skip it if you want sweetness or something conventionally pretty. This is for spring mornings and early summer afternoons, a quiet walk through a botanic garden before the crowds arrive. It is a green silk scarf soaked in bitter citrus, elegant but never soft.
