Our take

Close Up by Olfactive Studio opens with a barely restrained pop of cherry, the kind that is more candied than ripe, tangled with a sharp coffee note and a dusting of spices. Annick Menardo does not let this sweetness run wild. Almost immediately, a dry white tobacco and a smoky cedar pull the composition into darker territory, with patchouli anchoring the heart and a faint rose adding a whisper of floral tension. The base is all plush comfort: tonka, amber, and a clean musk that smooths the edges into a warm, vanillic finish.

This is a fragrance that feels like a velvet armchair in a dimly lit lounge, the leather worn soft and the air thick with espresso and clove. It leans sweet, but its sweetness is tempered by woody and tobacco facets that keep it from tipping into cloying territory. The performance is moderate, projection sitting close after an hour, and longevity around four to five hours before fading into a skin scent. That makes it more of an intimate evening choice than a statement piece.

It suits someone who enjoys gourmand touches without wanting to smell edible, and it works best in autumn or winter, especially for dinners or nights out. Skip this if you need strong sillage or prefer crisp, airy scents. It is a perfectly pleasant, well blended oriental that never quite erupts into brilliance, but for a cozy, spiced cherry tobacco moment, it hits the spot.
