Our take

Genie des Bois opens with a violet so true it could have been plucked from a damp spring garden, its petals still holding a silver kiss of morning dew beside a whisper of Brazilian rosewood that suggests polished, antique furniture. The violet leaf emerges quickly, not cutting or green, but softly earthy, like crushed stems underfoot. As it develops, a gentle warmth arrives: benzoin smoothed with cacao pod and tonka bean. Instead of a heavy gourmand, the cacao plays as a dusty, powdered cocoa nib, more woody and unsweetened than dessert-like. This is the scent of a velvet-upholstered library in a forest cottage, where a forgotten book has pressed violets between its pages for years.

The dry down turns powdery and softly balsamic, with the violet fading into a cozy, ambered skin scent. It feels refined and quietly natural, clearly niche in its understated elegance, but this subtlety comes at a cost. With a sillage rating under 3 and longevity hovering around 3.2, it fades from the air within a few hours and sits close to the skin. That makes it perfect for intimate evening wear or a solo spring afternoon in the city, but it will not announce your arrival or survive a long workday. Those who adore diaphanous, shy florals with a woody backbone will find a companion here; anyone craving projection or a vanilla bomb should look elsewhere. It is a whisper, not a shout, and that is exactly its charm.
