Our take

Lemon and grapefruit hit hard and sour right away, backed by mint, basil and tarragon for an almost savory, herbal green streak running through the citrus. Black currant adds a small dark fruit note underneath, giving the citrus something to play against instead of running alone. This is a much greener, more herbal citrus than the tarragon and basil alone would suggest, tarragon especially bringing a faint anise quality that keeps surfacing throughout the wear.

Orange blossom and jasmine soften the heart, but shiso, coriander and black pepper keep pulling it back toward green and savory territory, away from anything sweet or purely floral. Shiso is the least expected of the three, giving the florals a faintly minty, herbal edge that runs straight through the heart.

Musk, vetiver, amber, labdanum and civet round out the base, adding warmth without ever really sweetening things up. Wear time has a middling constitution, holding on for a reasonable while but never demanding much attention. What carries off the skin stays modest too, a bright, herbal halo that never strays far from the wearer. The herbal, slightly bitter thread from basil and tarragon gives Mandarino di Amalfi a savory edge that runs through the whole wear, well past the simple, sweet citrus splash the top notes suggest at first.
