Aldehydes give Metallique its name-checked shimmer, a bright, slightly waxy fizz laid over pink pepper and bergamot at the very start. Tom Ford doesn't chase the cold, mineral effect the name suggests, though: the aldehydic sparkle fades fast into something much softer. Heliotrope, hawthorn and lily-of-the-valley take over next, a powdery floral heart, soft and slightly sweet, closer to a vintage face powder than to brushed steel. The name promises something sleek and industrial; the fragrance itself is warm and nostalgic instead.
Vanilla, ambrette, Peru balsam and sandalwood form a warm, balsamic base, and this is where Metallique spends most of its life, sweet and musky rather than sharp. Longevity is unremarkable, holding at a fair pace before thinning out, and the sillage stays modest, noticed within a small radius around the wearer, never pushing much beyond that.
This appeals to a wearer who likes old-school aldehydic florals with a soft, powdery finish, and it will read as too retro for anyone hoping the name promised something sleek and modern. Fall brings out the best in it, though it holds up reasonably well across most of the year, especially once the initial fizz has settled into the warmer base beneath it.
