Our take

You are not ready for 1805 Tonnerre. It opens with a burst of lime that is immediately torched by smoke and gunpowder, a citrus peel thrown onto a fire of wet timber and spent cartridges. The sharpness is bracing, almost acrid, before the heart softens into sea water and brandy, a brine-soaked tavern floor where spilled liquor meets salt spray. The dry down is where the fragrance finds its footing: balsam fir and cedar take over, dry and resinous, anchored by a warm amber that never turns sweet. The overall character is like standing on a wrecked pier in November, a bottle of cheap brandy in one hand and a damp match in the other. It is heavy, aromatic, and distinctly synthetic in the best niche sense, the gunpowder note never fully surrendering to nature. The numbers tell the truth: longevity is solid at nearly four stars, but sillage sits closer to moderate, so do not expect to announce yourself from across a room. The rating of 3.65 reflects its divisiveness, this is not a crowd pleaser. It suits the person who wants to smell like a storm rolling in, not a sunny deck. Skip it if you prefer clean laundry or vanilla. Wear it in deep fall or winter, preferably after sunset, when the cold air lets the smoke linger. One spray is enough. Two and you might scare the horses.
