Our take

Lignum Vitae opens like a seaside bakery after a storm. The top notes throw a handful of citrus, ginger, and red fruits into a pan of warm biscuit and caramel, with sea salt already beginning to creep in from the base. That initial brightness is sharp and slightly chaotic, a briny lime spritz cut by black pepper and juniper before the heart settles into a woody, peppery core of guaiac and oud. The agarwood is present but not demanding, cushioned by vetiver and a faint, resinous olibanum. As it dries, the vanilla and amber rise to meet the oakmoss and sand, turning the sweetness into something gritty and mineral. The overall image is a weathered wooden pier at low tide: splintered, salty, smeared with the sticky residue of a melted toffee wrapper.

This is a fragrance that feels both natural and deliberately constructed. The marine notes never turn into a generic aquatic; they read more like damp driftwood and sea spray. The caramel and biscuit keep it from being too austere, while the woods and salt give it an edge. Yet the numbers speak to a real weakness: longevity and sillage are modest. On skin, this fades to a skin scent within a few hours, so do not expect to announce your arrival from across the room. It is not a bomb, it is a whisper with attitude.

Best worn in spring or fall, during the day. It suits someone who enjoys a salty sweet contrast, a bit of dissonance, and does not mind reapplying. Skip it if you want a monster projector or a linear gourmand. Lignum Vitae is a fleeting, peculiar walk along a beach where the candy shop meets the tide line.
