Our take

Aqua Regia opens like a laboratory experiment gone beautifully wrong. The bergamot and rose hit first, but this is no polite floral bouquet. The rose is dusty, almost medicinal, and the citrus is razor sharp. Then the eucalyptus comes roaring in with a camphorated, almost Vicks-like clarity that cuts through everything. It is jarring at first, but that is the point. The musk beneath adds a warm, animalic fuzz that softens the edges just enough.

What holds this together is the base. Vanilla and patchouli create a sweet, earthy foundation, while the oud and vetiver add a dry, leathery bitterness. The overall character is like a vintage apothecary jar filled with crushed herbs and sticky resin, left in the sun. It feels natural but not garden fresh. It is synthetic in the best way, like a perfumer’s construction of a memory rather than a real place.

The weakness is in the numbers. Longevity at 3.82 and sillage at 3.24 mean this wears close to the skin after a few hours. It is not a projector. This fragrance suits someone who enjoys tension in their scent, who wants to smell like a concept rather than a crowd pleaser. Skip it if you want a straightforward freshie or a heavy oud bomb. Wear it in spring or fall, daytime preferred. It feels like an intellectual choice, not a seductive one. Is there a more cerebral woody chypre on the market right now? Possibly not.
