Our take

Shanghai 1930 opens like a glass of chilled green tea splashed with overripe mango and a dusting of cinnamon, the violet leaves adding a dewy, almost metallic greenness that cuts through the sweetness. That initial fruit punch is short-lived, quickly surrendering to a dense, creamy wall of white florals. Tuberose and jasmine sambac take center stage, their indolic swagger softened by the powdery sweetness of magnolia and the honeyed heft of champaca and ylang-ylang. There is an odd ozonic, aquatic shimmer running through the heart, as if the bouquet were floating in a shallow pool of rainwater.

On dry down, the florals settle into a familiar vanilla-tonka base with warm sandalwood and a whisper of myrrh, amber gluing everything together into a soft, slightly syrupy embrace. The overall impression is that of a silk robe embroidered with overblown gardenias, left to air in a humid conservatory. It feels sweet and lush, leaning more mainstream than aggressively niche, though the sheer number of floral notes can come across as a bit synthetic in the mid-stage.

With a sillage rating just over three, this fragrance stays close to the skin after the first hour, making it a polite choice for spring brunches or lazy summer afternoons. The longevity is decent at nearly four hours, but do not expect to leave a trail.
