Atelier Materi’s Burgundy Oud opens with a tart, jammy slap of blackcurrant and bergamot, the fruit polished by a warm fizz of Guatemalan cardamom. That initial brightness is quickly tempered by a floral heart that feels almost bruised: geranium’s green edge, magnolia’s creamy weight, and davana’s herbal wine-like twist. The base sinks into a supple leather softened by smooth amyris, while the oud stays refined, never turning barnyard or medicinal. The overall effect is like a glass of blackberry liqueur spilled across a worn leather armchair, decadent and slightly melancholy.
This is a decidedly niche composition, natural in its development and glossy without feeling synthetic. It carries a fruity sweetness that never cloys, balanced by the animalic warmth of leather and the woody depth of oud. Yet it wears close to the skin. With longevity around 3.85 and sillage at 3.56, this is no room-filler. It whispers rather than shouts, which suits its introspective character but may frustrate those who want a booming signature scent.
