Our take

A commute through a city in daylight is the natural setting for The Beat, backed up by a day score that towers over its night numbers. Pink pepper, mandarin orange and cardamom open sharp and citrusy, with bergamot keeping the whole top accord bright rather than sugary. Cardamom in particular gives the opening a faint spice kick alongside the citrus.

Tea and bellflower give the heart a green, slightly bitter cast, and iris adds a powdery, cool edge that pulls the composition toward something mineral, almost stony. Bellflower is the less obvious note here, adding a green, slightly cool freshness under the tea and iris. By the base, white musk, vetiver and cedar bring a clean, woody finish, understated the whole way through.

Hold on skin runs about average, and sillage settles at a modest bubble, picked up by a coworker sitting close enough to catch the citrus. The whole thing reads efficient and low-key, built for repeat, everyday wear more than a special occasion. Anyone who wants a bright, green, almost mineral citrus for daytime wear will like what The Beat does, though anyone hoping for a warmer, sweeter floral should look elsewhere.
