Ithaka opens with a sharp, almost accusatory burst of bergamot, the citrus sliced thin and left to bleed into a cloud of incense that rises immediately. There is no soft handover here; the magnolia appears not as a demure flower but as a waxy, slightly bruised bloom dragged through amber and labdanum. The dry down is where this fragrance earns its keep. A dark, rooty cypriol oil tangled with Virginia cedar and patchouli, while benzoin warms the edges into something balsamic and resinous. It smells like the inside of an old wooden church after a rainstorm, the pews still damp, the incense smoke clinging to the stone. The overall character is heavy and earthy, leaning into smoky and woody territories with a medicinal bitterness that never quite sweetens. For a niche composition, it feels grounded and natural despite its complexity.
The numbers tell an honest story. Longevity hovers just under four hours, and sillage stays close to the skin, which is a shame given the richness here. You get a faint ghost of it on your collar come evening, but the projection vanishes faster than the concept deserves. This is best worn in fall, when the air has enough bite to lift those dry, spicy resins, and on a quiet day when you do not need to announce yourself. It suits the person who wants to smell like a place rather than a perfume, someone who chooses introspection over projection. Skip it if you crave sweetness or any hint of conventional floral lightness, because the magnolia is only a rumor in the incensal mud.
