Our take

Sogno Reale opens with a bright, almost briny slap of lemon and bergamot over a marine accord that feels less like a clean ocean breeze and more like the damp wood of a dock at low tide. Rum and olibanum add a sticky, resinous warmth, while the tuberose peeks through with a creamy, slightly narcotic sweetness. As it settles, the hyrax makes itself known not as a barnyard blast but as a furry, animalic hum beneath amber and styrax, and the sandalwood and patchouli dry it out into a leathery, incense-laced base.

The overall impression is of a weathered sailor’s journal, its pages stained with salt spray and spilled grog, tucked inside a wax-sealed chest in a forgotten port. It is undeniably niche, natural in its rawness and synthetic only in the sense that no real ocean smells this complex and carnal. The longevity is decent for a citrus aromatic at around five hours, but the sillage is modest, barely a whisper after the first hour, which suits its intimate, contemplative character. Best worn in fall or spring, during a sunny afternoon that carries a hint of chill, and best suited to someone who wants a fragrance that smells lived in, not freshly showered. Skip it if your idea of marine is a crisp aquatic. Can a perfume really capture the scent of a secret? This one comes close.
