Our take

You open a bottle of Oud by The Spirit of Dubai and immediately feel the weight of a sheikh’s private treasure chest, crammed with saffron-threaded silks, pineapple gilded with pepper, and a fistful of pine and bitter almond that cuts through the sweetness like a blade. The top notes are a startlingly dense clutter—fruits, florals, spice—but they burn off fast, leaving a heart that is less a garden than a resinous cathedral: agarwood, myrrh, olibanum, jasmine, and a dozen roses stacked like altar candles. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its rating of 4.22 and its near-perfect longevity of 4.30; the base turns into a leather-wrapped oud with patchouli, tobacco, and a vanilla-tinged sweetness that never goes gourmand. It’s heavy, unmistakably synthetic in its polish—this is niche luxury, not a dirt-road oud—and it projects with a confident (3.92) sillage that clings for eight hours. Who should wear it? The man who wants to smell like an appointment, not a stroll. Skip it if you prefer airy freshness or subtlety; this is a fragrance for winter evenings, for black-tie dinners and cold nights where its warmth can settle without suffocating. Its one weakness: that chaotic opening tries to do everything at once, but if you give it ten minutes, the picture sharpens into a single, specific image—an oud-rose carpet unrolled across a marble floor, incense still smoking in the corner.
