Our take

The apartment door clicks shut. Outside, the street is wet and the air bites at exposed skin. Inside, the heater hums and a heavy glass tumbler sits on the table, half-full of dark spirit. Forbidden Fuel lives in this room. The opening hits with the sharp bite of rum and cinnamon, smelling exactly like that drink and the rough bark of the old wooden table beneath it. Davana adds a fruity, slightly herbal twist that keeps the spicy opening from feeling too dry.

As the evening settles, the scent deepens. Benzoin and cloves create a resinous, sticky warmth that mixes with the smoke of a burning candle. The tobacco note is dry and leafy, pressed between the sweet vanilla absolute and the dark, earthy patchouli that grounds the blend. It feels like a thick sweater and the silence of a night spent indoors. The spices are potent and the vanilla is rich, creating a heavy, gourmand atmosphere that fills the small space completely.

Mathieu Nardin composed a fragrance that captures a specific, cozy solitude. The blend is rich and the spices are loud, but the synthetic edge on the vanilla absolute feels slightly sharp against the natural warmth of the benzoin. It lacks a smooth transition between the boozy top and the resinous heart. The composition feels a bit crowded, with the patchouli fighting the sweetness for attention rather than supporting it.
