Our take

Flint anchors the heart alongside pepper and pelargonium, giving the fragrance a dry, earthy edge that runs under the citrus from the start. Pelargonium sits alongside the pepper, both feeding the fresh spicy, aromatic core of the heart. Orange and grapefruit open bright, then cool fast, like citrus poured over gravel.

Vetiver, cedar, patchouli and benzoin settle into a woody, earthy base that carries most of the composition's weight, aromatic and warm spicy rather than sweet or heavy. Benzoin adds a warm spicy hum underneath the vetiver and cedar, rounding out an otherwise austere base, and the scent settles into a small bubble that someone standing near will pick up clearly. Jean-Claude Ellena composed it, and the restraint shows throughout: nothing here is loud, and the citrus opening never lingers long enough to turn candied.

Longevity is long-lasting, sticking around once it settles into the skin. The season spread covers spring through fall with room into winter too, and the day figures far outweigh the night ones, making it an easy choice for the office or outdoors in daylight.

Terre d'Hermès stays dry and earthy throughout, orange and grapefruit settling into vetiver, cedar and patchouli by the finish, benzoin holding a last touch of warmth underneath it all.
