Our take

Orange and grapefruit open juicy and a little bitter, standard citrus territory until flint arrives in the heart and changes the entire direction of the fragrance. Flint smells exactly like its name suggests: struck stone, a faint spark of something mineral and dry, unmistakably a rock and not a plant. This is the note doing all the interesting work in Terre d'Hermes Parfum, giving the whole composition a cool, stony backbone that the citrus alone never could.

Woodsy notes, oak moss and benzoin settle in for a long, earthy finish. This base is where the mineral flint idea turns into something warmer without losing its dry, stony character. Oak moss deepens the earthiness with a damp, brown quality, benzoin adds a soft resinous sweetness at the very back, warming the finish just enough to balance the stony citrus opening, and the woodsy notes tie everything back to where it started. It holds its ground without much fading, and it keeps a quiet, close-range presence, felt by whoever is nearby.

Terre d'Hermes Parfum works across most of the year and both halves of the day, which says something about how well the citrus-to-mineral-to-wood structure is built. It rewards a taste for texture and mineral character over sweetness or flowers, and it will feel austere to anyone expecting warmth right away.
