Rare Reef arrives like a splash of citrus soda on a scorching dock, all zesty orange, grapefruit, and a bright coriander-spiked mint that cuts through the heat with surgical precision. The opening is brilliantly tart, almost aggressive, with blackcurrant adding a sharp, dark berry tang. It feels synthetic in the best way, a deliberately polished aquatic-fruity affair that knows exactly what it is: a crowd-pleaser, but a clever one. Lucas Sieuzac doesn’t let the citrus linger too long. Within minutes, a surprising softness blooms, as apricot and violet leaf weave a green, almost powdery sweetness, while basil and a whisper of rose keep things from tipping into jammy territory. The base settles into a creamy, figgy warmth with dates and ambrette lending a subtle, skin-like musk and amberwood providing a clean, woody anchor. The overall image is a coral reef at low tide, sunbaked and mineral, where a discarded fruit basket has spilled onto the sand. It’s fresh, sweet, and aromatic, but never syrupy. The weaknesses are plain: the sillage is a polite cloud, not a wake, and longevity barely pushes beyond four hours on my skin.
