Nuit Noire
Fragrance notes
Character
Nuit Noire opens with a citrus slap that quickly gets tangled in ginger and cardamom, a bright but nervy start that promises something darker. Within minutes, the orange blossom tries to soften the edges, but the heart emerges as a thick, clove-studded tuberose, spiced with cinnamon and anchored by olibanum and cedar. It is not a shy floral. This is a bloom that has been left out overnight, bruised and resinous, wrapped in leather and a powdery, animalic musk that hums long after the white petals have faded.
The dry down is where the fragrance finally settles into its character: a warm, ambered leather with a touch of tonka sweetness, but the sillage here is modest and the longevity only just carries through an evening. You have to lean in to catch the later stages, which is frustrating for something this opulent. The balance leans slightly more toward night than day, but it wears comfortably in spring and fall, particularly when the air has a bite.
This is for someone who likes their florals dirty and their spices loud, someone who wants a tuberose that doesn’t apologize. Skip it if you prefer clean, airy scents or need a fragrance that projects across a room. Nuit Noire feels like a velvet chair in a dimly lit club, worn and a little threadbare, but still holding the warmth of the last person who sat there. Is that enough for a 3.98 rating? For the right wearer, it is.
