Black Opium Intense opens with a surprising jolt: absinthe’s green, almost medicinal bite and a puckered boysenberry that reads more syrupy than fresh. The heart is where this fragrance earns its reputation. Coffee, rich and slightly burnt, tangles with jasmine sambac and orange blossom, but the flowers are smothered, never allowed to fully bloom. It smells less like a garden and more like a nightclub floor at 3 a.m. Vanilla and licorice in the base pull the whole thing into a sticky, powdery embrace, with sandalwood adding a dry, woody anchor. It projects for about two hours before huddling close to skin, and the four hour lifespan is generous. Fans of the original Black Opium will find this more intense in the sweet, boozy sense, but less wearable. Who should wear it?
