Our take

The train slows near a dusty platform where crates of mandarin oranges sit beside burlap sacks. A vendor breaks pink peppercorns over a hot wok, the sharp heat rising with the steam of fresh ginger root. The air carries that bright, biting start, citrus oil mingling with spice in the dry morning wind.

A woman walks past carrying a bouquet of fresh rose stems, their petals still cool from the early market. She passes a small altar where frankincense coils burn low, sending a thin gray ribbon of resin smoke through the air. The flower and the incense meet in the space between the cars, softening the initial bite with a layer of calm, sacred warmth.

Beneath the metal steps, the ground is damp with shade. Oakmoss clings to the old timber, earthy and deep, while benzoin weeps from a cracked container nearby, sticky and sweet. Sandalwood shavings line a carpenter's bench, their cream-colored dust settling into the grain of the wood. These heavier materials ground the scene, pulling the bright top layer down into the soil.

The steam from the ginger mixes with the rose as the whistle blows, the frankincense hanging in the air just above the mossy earth, the sandalwood waiting in the dark corner of the carriage floor as the doors begin to slide shut and the platform fades into a blur of light and dust
