Our take

Y Le Parfum starts with an aldehydic sparkle over apple and grapefruit, the kind of crisp opening that recalls a freshly ironed shirt rather than a fruit stand. Ginger gives it a little heat early on, and then lavender and sage settle into an herbal, faintly green heart, with geranium adding a sharp lift over both. Cedar, olibanum and patchouli round out the base under a soft tonka warmth, and the fougere structure stays recognizable the whole way through, aldehydes doing the sparkling work that citrus alone usually carries.

The herbal-lavender heart holds together well, sturdy through wear, and sillage stays a small, contained cloud that only someone standing close will catch. Yves Saint Laurent built this for year-round wear, and the season numbers back that up almost evenly across spring, summer, fall and winter, with no single stretch left out. It reads as a grown-up take on the classic aromatic fougere. Sage keeps a faintly bitter, herbal note running under the lavender, and geranium's green sharpness lasts well into the drydown alongside the cedar. It holds its structure from the office through whatever the evening turns into, without asking for much attention along the way.
