Our take

Fancy by Yana opens with a bright, medicinal lift. Lemon and eucalyptus provide a sharp, cooling edge, while saffron and star anise introduce a warm, culinary spice. The start is crisp and slightly herbal, creating an initial impression that feels clean and assertive rather than sweet.

The heart settles into a dense, woody profile. Oud and patchouli dominate here, offering a dark, earthy resinous quality. Sandalwood and cedar add structural timber notes, while vetiver contributes a grassy, root-like bitterness. This phase is dry and aromatic, moving the scent away from its citrus introduction toward a heavier, more serious character.

The base is where the composition spends most of its time. Ambergris and oakmoss provide a damp, mossy foundation that feels distinctly old-school. Tonka bean and vanilla attempt to soften this earthiness with a creamy, powdery sweetness, but the white musk keeps the finish feeling clean rather than gourmand. The limitation here is the balance. The vanilla and tonka bean often clash with the sharp oakmoss and bitter oud, creating a muddled transition where the sweet and earthy elements compete rather than blend. It can feel disjointed as the powdery accords struggle to harmonize with the heavy, balsamic woods.
